(Auction at Christie's NY. 13 October 2008. New York, Rockefeller Plaza)
A private viewing was hosted by Murray Moss and Franklin Getchell, Andrea Fiuczynski, President, Christies Los Angeles and Joshua Holdeman, Senior Vice President and International Director Tuesday, September 16, 2008.
Christie's was entrusted with the sale of Photographs from the Collection of Bruce and Nancy Berman across a series of three single-owner auctions in 2008/2009. All took place at Christie's in New York, with the sale of the Eggleston selection on October 13 the second of the three. Christies partnered with Moss on an exclusive Los Angeles exhibition, with select Eggleston highlights on show in September of 2008 on Melrose Avenue.
The arrangement and placement of the photos at Moss were meant to express the same casual malaise evoked in the images. The October 13th sale totaled $3 million with 90% of lots sold.
The Bermans have lived and worked in the Los Angeles film community for the past 30 years. As an acknowledgment of gratitude to the city that has afforded their lives and collecting activities, they elected to pair each of the sales with substantial donations of photographs to three prominent Los Angeles arts institutions; The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the J. Paul Getty Museum.
Comprised of 2,500 photographs ranging from early American masters such as Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange to post war luminaries such as Diane Arbus and William Eggleston, the Berman Collection is singular in its volume and depth of holdings of works by certain key artists that figure prominently in the history of 20th century art and culture."
