Artist: Jeff Kowatch Exhibition: "Figurative + Abstraction" The Earl McGrath Gallery September 21-October 14, 2006 Curator: Dane Jensen
The artists most recent works, painted meticulously over an eight-month period, were completed for his Stratus Mountainous Cumulus exhibition at the Earl McGrath Gallery Los Angeles. These new paintings were inspired from an exhibition of Chinese mountain paintings Kowatch viewed in Paris. He developed a process for this series involving painting, drying, sanding and then repeating. At their completion each painting has over eighty applications. The effect created gives them a muted sense of depth and radiance with colors bleeding through from underlying application and a seemingly perfectly smooth surface from the artists incredibly refined sanding technique.
In his ten years association with the Earl McGrath Gallery, Jeff Kowatch has had six solo shows with the gallery. The artists work has been featured in numerous gallery group shows, such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Laguna Art Museum and the Long Beach Museum of Art. Also, a series of paintings titled "The Twelve Apostles" was exhibited at James Chapel of the Union Theological Seminary at Columbia curated by Earl McGrath in 1997. Jeff Kowatch was born and educated in Los Angeles and now lives and works in Brussels, Belgium.
