Artist: Melissa Coote Exhibition: "Figurative + Abstraction" The Earl McGrath Gallery September 21-October 14, 2006 Curator: Dane Jensen
Cootes work has been described as meditative and haunting, where images of hands, eyes, skulls, bones emerge and disappear into a space that can only best be described as a void. They are an intense examination of the natural form. The artist has developed a unique and meticulous method of achieving these ghostly forms through a process of building-up her surface layer upon layer then stripping the work down through rubbing, scrubbing, drilling and erasing parts on the canvas, eventually revealing an underlying form.
Melissa has had numerous solo shows internationally including a solo show with the Earl McGrath Gallery New York in 2005. She was born and lives in Sydney, Australia, and has an MA in Painting from the University of Western Sydney.
